Mera Peak: The highest trekking peak

Mera peak (6476 meters) is truly a well known mountain peak in the Hinku valley of Mahalangur Himalayan Range of Eastern Nepal. Mera peak is recognized as the highest trekking peak, and Government of Nepal has given authority to Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) to issue its climbing permit. The first successful summit of Mera peak was made in 1953 by Col. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing, who is also popular as ‘Foreign Sportsman’. It clearly shows that this peak has been able to garner climbers’ attention before the beginning of commercial mountaineering in Nepal.

Mera peak climbing, a moderate grade trip that includes both hiking and snow climbing experience is one of the best favorable peaks for mountaineering beginners and snow climbing enthusiasts. One can enjoy unique and mind blowing mountain views from the top of Mera. Summit of Mera peak allows you to capture 360- degree panoramic views of five world’s highest mountains above 8000 meters that includes Everest (8848m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lotse (8516m), Makalu(8485m) and Cho Oyu (8201m) as well as several other beautiful snow capped mountains in Khumbu region. Expedition on Mera Peak is a great opportunity to fulfill one’s dreams of experience what it is like to stand on a Himalayan summit, thus it has now undoubtedly become one of the best selling peaks in Nepal.

Though it is a bit of physically demanding, this peak is deemed suitable for anyone who is fit and keen on mountaineering. In addition to the charm of Mera peak climbing, the trek from Lukla to Mera peak Base Camp offers some of the remote and wild alpine areas of the Hinku valley, south of Mt. Everest.

Spring (March, April and May) and autumn (September, October and November) are considered as the most suitable time for Mera peak climbing mainly because of the pleasant weather and clear visibility. Though we are open to organize Mera peak climbing throughout the year, we found that generally the best months are May and October to climb Mera. March and November are cold months, so if you decide to climb in these months, you need to be prepared to overcome colder conditions.

Today climb Mera Peak (6476m.) and return back to Khare. The climb to the summit of Mera peak starts at around 3 AM in the morning depending on snow and general weather conditions. The central summit will soon appear above the head of a wide glacier flanked by two ridges. We climb the centre of these open snowfields and avoid crevasses. The route then swings south-east, skirting below and to the east of the left-hand ridge before turning back rightwards towards the main summit ridge of Mera. Mera actually has three summits; the highest is our goal. We reach this by following a classic snow-ridge to just below the final wall that guards the top. This short steep snow slope is easily climbed but there is a big effort required to climb the last 50 meters. The summit opens up to the panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Lhotse Shar, Makalu, Ama Dablam and many more. After taking pictures and enjoying the view, descend by the same route back to our campsite below the Mera La.

Mera Peak Climbing Altitude Profile

FAQs

Yes, Mera Peak is widely regarded as one of the best introductory peaks for first-time climbers. While it reaches an impressive altitude, the route is relatively straightforward with minimal technical sections. That said, climbing Mera does involve glacier travel, cold temperatures, and long summit days, so prior trekking experience and basic fitness are essential. Basic mountaineering training (e.g., using crampons, ice axe, and harness) is often provided before the summit push.

Mera Peak is considered a moderate difficulty climb. Technically, it’s easier than many other peaks in Nepal, with most of the ascent on snow slopes and glaciers. However, the main challenges are:

  • High altitude
  • Long summit day (10–12 hours)
  • Cold and windy weather

With good acclimatization, preparation, and guidance, even trekkers without prior climbing experience can successfully summit Mera.

A typical Mera Peak expedition takes 16 to 20 days, including:

  • Arrival in Kathmandu
  • Flight to Lukla
  • Trek through Paiya, Pangom, and Khote
  • Acclimatization at Tangnag and Khare
  • Summit attempt from High Camp
  • Return via the same route or optionally via Zatrwa La Pass

This itinerary ensures proper acclimatization and includes buffer days for weather or altitude-related delays.

The best seasons for climbing Mera Peak are:

  • Spring (March to May): Mild temperatures, stable weather, and blooming rhododendrons.
  • Autumn (September to November): Clear skies, dry trails, and excellent mountain views.

Winter (December–February) is possible but very cold, while monsoon (June–August) brings rain, clouds, and poor trail conditions, making it less favorable.

You’ll need the following permits:

  • Mera Peak Climbing Permit (issued by Nepal Mountaineering Association – NMA)
  • Makalu Barun National Park Permit
  • Local Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.

Yes, hiring a licensed guide is mandatory and also highly recommended for your safety. Guides provide:

  • Navigation support
  • Technical instruction
  • Acclimatization management
  • Emergency assistance

Most agencies also include porters, kitchen staff, and climbing assistants, making the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

To prepare for Mera Peak, focus on building:

  • Cardiovascular endurance (hiking, running, cycling)
  • Strength training (especially legs and core)
  • Hiking with a backpack
  • Acclimatization training, if possible (via previous treks or altitude simulation)

Aim for at least 3–6 months of training before the expedition. Consistency and stamina are key, especially for the long summit day.

Trekking Phase: You’ll stay in teahouses—simple mountain lodges with basic amenities (beds, meals, toilets).

Climbing Phase (Khare to High Camp): Accommodation shifts to tented camps, where your team will provide sleeping tents, dining tents, and meals.

Camping above Khare is essential, as there are no teahouses near High Camp or the summit.

While trekking, teahouses offer a mix of local and international dishes, including:

  • Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables)
  • Pasta, noodles, soups
  • Porridge, eggs, pancakes

During the climbing phase, expedition cooks prepare high-calorie meals with soups, rice, pasta, potatoes, and hot drinks to maintain energy in the cold. Vegetarian and other dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

Yes. At 6476 meters, Mera Peak poses a real risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Proper acclimatization, hydration, and a slow ascent schedule are crucial. Symptoms to watch for include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

Your guide will monitor your health and carry first aid and oxygen in case of emergencies. Buffer days are built into the itinerary for rest or descent if needed.

You’ll need comprehensive travel and mountaineering insurance that includes:

  • Emergency helicopter evacuation
  • Coverage up to 6,500 meters
  • Medical expenses
  • Trip cancellations or delays

Always read the policy carefully and confirm that it covers trekking and climbing in Nepal at the required altitude.

The summit push typically starts around 2–3 a.m. from High Camp. Expect:

  • A slow ascent over a glacier with crampons and rope
  • Moderate inclines (20–30 degrees)
  • A steep but short final section before the summit

The round trip can take 10 to 12 hours, depending on your pace, weather, and acclimatization. The reward? One of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Himalayas.

Mera Peak is often chosen for:

  • Its non-technical nature (ideal for beginners)
  • Unmatched summit views
  • A remote, off-the-beaten-path experience
  • The chance to explore the Hinku Valley, which is less commercialized than the Everest trail

It’s perfect for those seeking a first Himalayan summit or a high-altitude adventure without extreme technical challenges.

Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition ensures you to provide a well planned itinerary for Mera Peak climbing. An experienced and highly professional climbing guide will be assigned to each climbing member. All necessary logistics will be taken care from our side. However, we expect to maintain good health and physical condition as well as well good mental preparation from your side.
